In addition to general behaviour development there are certain special
needs of these children like Physio therapy, speech therapy and treatment
for neurological disorders. The Institute for this purpose has a doctor,
three Physio-Therapists, one occupational therapist and two Speech Therapist
and Special Educators. We firmly believe that our "special children
are disabled but not unable". Vocational training is provided to the
students to safeguard both self-sufficiency and self reliance.
1. Speech Therapy Centre at AFGJI is functioning wef
03 Dec 1997. The aim of opening this center is to help the hearing impaired
to come to term with the handicap and to develop skills which will alleviate
the adverse results of deafness so that he/she can continue to function
within his/her social and occupational competency. The Centre provides
a complete "Audiological Rehabilitation".
2. Early Intervention Programme: Earlier the children
were admitted on the age of 6 year and above in Special Wing. This year,
the school has started early intervention programme for the children
of age 3 to 6 years to develop self help skill among such children.
Parents of such children undergo traumatic experience and in many cases
fail to reconcile. Counseling and guidance to these parents can help
them in accepting the reality and start the training of such children
at the earliest.
3. Vocational & Rehabilitation Programme : Since
the year 1999-2000, Vocational and Rehabilitation Centre was started
for the students of age 18 yrs to 22 yrs. The vocational training programme
is conducted in various fields like Home Management, Envelope making,
Weaving, Candle making, Weaving, Printing & Xeroxing, Gardening,
Painting and, Art & Craft, and Computers.
4. The purpose of Vocational training is to develop
proper eye hand co-ordination and ensure that the children can be engaged
in some meaningful activity to their ability. It also ensures a secure
future through gainful employment which restores and enhances their
self esteem, helps them to lead a life with dignity and to be employed
gainfully after passing out from the Institute.
5. We believe that the only way to achieve mainstreaming or normalization
of mentally handicapped is to accept the special children as they are
and to provide them environment to promote healthy social interaction
with others so that they can grow and develop into a useful member of
the society.
